They found some quite shocking results which point to RISCOS Ltd having lost their way.Sun, 08 Nov 2009 10:02:53 GMTdonotreply@osnews.com (Kroc Camen)RISC OS2http://www.osnews.com/topics/74NewsAndrew DuffellRISC OS on the Beagle Board: You Can Help http://www.osnews.com/story/22410/RISC_OS_on_the_Beagle_Board_You_Can_Help/ http://www.osnews.com/story/22410/RISC_OS_on_the_Beagle_Board_You_Can_Help/With all the good news around Haiku and Amiga/MorphOS, you'd almost forget that other "old" alternative operating system, with most of its following residing in the United Kingdom: RISC OS. This operating system is fighting a predictable problem: a lack of hardware.Thu, 29 Oct 2009 22:24:30 GMTdonotreply@osnews.com (Thom Holwerda)RISC OS15http://www.osnews.com/topics/74NewsAndrew DuffellDrobe Closes Its Doors After Ten Years http://www.osnews.com/story/22203/Drobe_Closes_Its_Doors_After_Ten_Years/ http://www.osnews.com/story/22203/Drobe_Closes_Its_Doors_After_Ten_Years/Drobe.co.uk, the premier RISC OS news website, today announced that it has entered archive mode and will no longer function as a news reporting source. The site was founded by Peter Price in 1999 and editorship was taken over by journalist Chris Williams in 2001. Chris first broke the sad news on Monday morning via usenet: "Drobe's RISC OS news service, which launched in October 1999, will sadly cease from Monday. Running the site has been so much fun over the years and the experience has been very rewarding - from the investigative pieces and tabloid tomfoolery to the libel writ threats and meeting up with users after shows. However, all good things must come to an end - if you'll forgive the cliche - and it's time to formally move on."Mon, 21 Sep 2009 21:40:28 GMTdonotreply@osnews.com (Kroc Camen)RISC OS13http://www.osnews.com/topics/74NewsrhyderTalks of RISC OS Porting to ARM Cortex-A8 http://www.osnews.com/story/22096/Talks_of_RISC_OS_Porting_to_ARM_Cortex-A8/ http://www.osnews.com/story/22096/Talks_of_RISC_OS_Porting_to_ARM_Cortex-A8/"US-based company Genesi, which builds ARM Cortex-powered appliances that could be compatible with the RISC OS Open Beagleboard work, is said to be in talks with RISC OS companies over a possible port of the OS to its products. It's hoped ROS 5 could be made to run on the lightweight EFIKA MX Open Client, which sports a 800MHz Cortex-A8 processor, 3D graphics hardware, 512M RAM, wifi networking and more. Genesi analyst Matt Sealey said: 'RISC OS is really popular in the UK and the last dedicated RISC OS box - the Iyonix - has been discontinued for six months. We are currently questioning the relevant companies in the UK, including [ROS 5 owners] Castle, about collaboration and marketing efforts, and the support they'd need to make it a reality.'"Tue, 01 Sep 2009 18:29:50 GMTdonotreply@osnews.com (Jordan Spencer Cunningham)RISC OS14http://www.osnews.com/topics/74NewsJamesFirst Screenshot: Beagleboard Runs RISC OS 5 Desktop http://www.osnews.com/story/21469/First_Screenshot_Beagleboard_Runs_RISC_OS_5_Desktop/ http://www.osnews.com/story/21469/First_Screenshot_Beagleboard_Runs_RISC_OS_5_Desktop/We already reported on the port of RISC OS 5 to the Beagleboard, but at that time, it couldn't yet boot the graphical shell. This has now been resolved, and there's a screenshot to prove it. The code should already be in the ROOL CVS repository, so adventurous Beagleboard owners can start playing with it.Mon, 11 May 2009 13:46:46 GMTdonotreply@osnews.com (Thom Holwerda)RISC OS3http://www.osnews.com/topics/74NewsRISC OS 5 Pictured Running on ARM Cortex-A8 Kit http://www.osnews.com/story/21395/RISC_OS_5_Pictured_Running_on_ARM_Cortex-A8_Kit/ http://www.osnews.com/story/21395/RISC_OS_5_Pictured_Running_on_ARM_Cortex-A8_Kit/Drobe has scored evidence that Jeffrey Lee, with help from Uwe Kall and ROOL staff, have managed to port RISC OS 5 to the Beagleboard, a board with a 600Mhz Cortex A8 ARM processor and 256MB of RAM. There are those who have RISC OS 5 and are fed up with RISCOS Ltd saying: "Yes, we want to do RISC OS Select on Iyonix, but..." Then there are those who have subscribed to ROL's Select scheme, but the features they want have not been implemented or they are frustrated by a lack of progress. It is fair to say ROL has made a large number of improvements to the OS over the years and many of these are 'under the hood' that are not always immediately obvious to users. There have been a few obvious user-facing improvements since the release of RISC OS 6, as part of Select 5, so let's take a look at these."Tue, 21 Apr 2009 20:52:54 GMTdonotreply@osnews.com (Thom Holwerda)RISC OS11http://www.osnews.com/topics/74News"Archimedes Operating System - A User's Guide" http://www.osnews.com/story/20849/_Archimedes_Operating_System_-_A_User_s_Guide_/ http://www.osnews.com/story/20849/_Archimedes_Operating_System_-_A_User_s_Guide_/The incredible pagetable.com continues to erupt historical joy with the conversion of "Archimedes Operating System - A User's Guide" to PDF. This news came down pretty hard on the already small RISC OS community, but it did have a number of positive effects: representatives from both ROL and ROOL were quick to explain that there is absolutely no animosity between the two companies, and that the community has nothing to fear.Tue, 16 Dec 2008 16:46:04 GMTdonotreply@osnews.com (Thom Holwerda)RISC OS6http://www.osnews.com/topics/74NewsteigetjeRISCOS Ltd Might Take Legal Action Against RISC OS Open Ltd http://www.osnews.com/story/20632/RISCOS_Ltd_Might_Take_Legal_Action_Against_RISC_OS_Open_Ltd/ http://www.osnews.com/story/20632/RISCOS_Ltd_Might_Take_Legal_Action_Against_RISC_OS_Open_Ltd/And it seems as if another minor, barely-alive operating system will become encumbered by legal bickering between two small companies. The RISC OS scene, which is already a tangled and complicated mess of companies, version number teasing and incompatible versions, might be torn apart even further because RISCOS Ltd might take legal action trying to prevent RISC OS Open Ltd from releasing a RiscPC compatible ROM from the RISC OS 5 shared source project. Should you feel confused, you needn't worry: so does everyone else.Wed, 10 Dec 2008 22:52:28 GMTdonotreply@osnews.com (Thom Holwerda)RISC OS10http://www.osnews.com/topics/74Newsteigetje'Virtually Free' RISC OS 4 ROM Released http://www.osnews.com/story/20618/_Virtually_Free_RISC_OS_4_ROM_Released/ http://www.osnews.com/story/20618/_Virtually_Free_RISC_OS_4_ROM_Released/Always wanted to try out RISC OS, but were you set back by the fact that you had to buy a new computer? RISCOS Ltd. has released a very cheap ROM image of RISC OS 4.02 which you can use in a free emulator like RPCemu. At only 5 GBP, this image, dubbed "Virtually Free" by the company, is the easiest way of trying out RISC OS. "RISC OS "Virtually Free" is a fully licensed complete package. It consists of a single 4 MB zip file containing a RISC OS 4.02 ROM image with the !Boot structure and other necessary applications and utilities. It is designed to be unzipped and installed in the emulator itself with most of the work being done from within the host environment." It will be available from RISCOS Ltd.'s sales page starting December 8.Sun, 07 Dec 2008 22:07:47 GMTdonotreply@osnews.com (Thom Holwerda)RISC OS38http://www.osnews.com/topics/74NewsteigetjeIyonix Range Taken Off the Market http://www.osnews.com/story/20340/Iyonix_Range_Taken_Off_the_Market/ http://www.osnews.com/story/20340/Iyonix_Range_Taken_Off_the_Market/A huge blow to the already small RISC OS market and community: Castle Technology has announced that the Iyonix range of ARM-based RISC OS computers will be taken off the market after 30th September. Support will continue through the Iyonix website, the dealer network, and by email. This leaves Advantage6 as the only manufacturer of RISC OS hardware with its A9Home computer.Mon, 29 Sep 2008 16:20:35 GMTdonotreply@osnews.com (Thom Holwerda)RISC OS14http://www.osnews.com/topics/74NewsteigetjeClick Right on with RISC OS http://www.osnews.com/story/19518/Click_Right_on_with_RISC_OS/ http://www.osnews.com/story/19518/Click_Right_on_with_RISC_OS/"When asked what they most like about RISC OS, many enthusiasts are likely to mention the fluid, slick and intuitive manner with which user and computer interact. In other words, the graphical user interface, or the GUI as the geeks would have us call it. With RISC OS, the GUI encourages all applications to work in a similar way, and to have the same feel. Faced with new RISC OS software, a user already has a good idea of how to drive it and explore."Mon, 24 Mar 2008 20:44:20 GMTdonotreply@osnews.com (Thom Holwerda)RISC OS7http://www.osnews.com/topics/74NewsUSB in Latest RISC OS 5 Source Release http://www.osnews.com/story/19379/USB_in_Latest_RISC_OS_5_Source_Release/ http://www.osnews.com/story/19379/USB_in_Latest_RISC_OS_5_Source_Release/"RISC OS Open and Castle have today published a new batch of RISC OS source code on the riscosopen.org website for everyone to get their grubby mitts on. This third installment of code comes after the first load of software blueprints were released in May and a second barrage in October, last year. The latest batch includes the messy insides of the RISC OS 5 USB system, various low-level hardware-related modules and a library for applications that use networks and the Internet."
